Amazing Cat Litter is Manufactured 100% Silica Gel Crystals

Silica gel is a granular, porous form of silica made synthetically from sodium silicate. Despite the name, silica gel is a solid. It is most often distributed in the form of beads, which are packaged in a semi-permeable packet, used in packaging to prevent moisture from entering into a product. The superior adsorbtion properties of 100% silica gel crystals make it the best odor control cat litter.

Silica Gel History
Silica gel was patented by chemistry professor Walter A. Patrick at John Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland in 1919. Prior to that it was already used in World War I for the adsorbption of vapors and gases in gas mask canisters and before that the substance was in existence as early as the 1640s as a scientific curiosity (Feldman 2003). In World War II silica gel was indispensable in the war effort in keeping penicillin dry, in protecting military equipment from moisture damage, as a fluid cracking catalyst for the production of high octane gasoline and as a catalyst support for the manufacture of butadiene from alcohol, an integral part of the synthetic rubber program.

Silica Gel Properties
Silica gel is form of silicon dioxide, SiO2, the material that occurs in nature as sand. The difference between silica gel and sand is that sand is a crystalline, non-porous form, whereas silica gel is non-crystalline and highly porous.

Silica gel is an amorphous adsorptive substance with stable chemical properties and has a highly complicated porous structure. It is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, and offers an excellent capacity for physical and chemical dehumidification because of good adsorbability, chemical stability, wide surface area and higher mechanical strength. Therefore, silica gel is used for packing food, pharmaceuticals, goods for export and precision instruments. Silica gel is easy to handle and silica gel saturated with moisture can be regenerated to afford new moisture protection by simply reheating under specified condition.

Its high porosity, around 800 m²/g, allows it to adsorb water readily, making it useful as a desiccant (drying agent). It can reduce the relative humidity in a closed space to around 40%. Once saturated with water, the gel can be regenerated (dried) by heating it to 150°C (300°F) for 1.5 hours per liter (about 1 dry quart measure or about 30oz weight) in a thick-walled Pyrex dish. Silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable and chemically unreactive.

Applications
Silica gel is used in various fields of our daily life as high adsorbent of high safety. Silica gel has excellent adsorption capacities at low relative humidity for keeping materials dry. Current uses of the desiccant (Silica Gel) include the following; pharmaceutical stoppers, laboratory desiccators, diagnostic and medical equipment, transformer tank breathers, drying flower, packaging during transportation and storage, gas drying and refining as well as protection of the electronic & telecommunications equipment, photographic and optical equipment, engines, clothing and leather goods, food (especially dried seaweed). Other uses of silica gel are aromatics, gas absorbent, hydrogel, and so on.

Silica Gel Used as Cat Litter
Silica gel is also used as cat litter, by itself or in combination with more traditional forms of cat litter (such as clay or bentonite.) It is trackless and virtually odorless.

100% silica gel crystals are used as a cat litter competing with traditional, less efficient litters. Silica gel can adsorb more urine than clay based litters as it is a superior desiccant compared to clay based litters.

Many cat litter manufacturers mix silica gel crystals with their clay litters calling it a "blend" of crystals, but 100% silica gel crystals provides superior adsorbtion of cat urine, eliminating urine odors and preventing the growth of bacteria providing the best management of cat litter pan odors.
